Overview
This locally owned restaurant was undergoing a rebrand and needed a refreshed web presence to match their new direction. Beyond the visual update, the project presented an opportunity to solve a longstanding content management frustration — the client was unhappy with their existing Joomla administration tools and needed a more manageable solution going forward.
My Role
- UX Design — User flows, wireframes, and information architecture
- Interaction Design — Navigation patterns and interactive elements suited to a restaurant audience
- Visual Design — UI controls and image assets designed through multiple iteration phases
- Information Architecture — Restructuring content to serve both dine-in and online visitors
- Project Management — Stakeholder collaboration and offshore development team direction
- Front-end Development — HTML, CSS edits and content implementation throughout the build
Process
Discovery & Information Architecture
I worked with the stakeholders to map out the user experience through user flows, wireframes, and UI mockups, iterating on the information architecture across several design phases until we reached an agreed-upon solution. The migration away from Joomla was addressed early — WordPress was selected as the CMS replacement, giving the client a significantly more intuitive backend for managing their own content.
Visual Design
With the structure established, I completed the final visual design of the UI controls and image assets, ensuring the new look aligned with the restaurant’s refreshed brand identity. Multiple design iterations were worked through with stakeholders before arriving at the final direction.
Development & Launch
I directed the offshore development team throughout the build, making direct HTML, CSS, and content edits to keep the implementation true to the approved designs. Before launch, I performed quality control and testing, coordinating with the developers on all required revisions. I then trained the client on WordPress administration and provided ongoing support for content and design updates post-launch.
